Sano is a Railroad siding on the Smoke Creek Desert. Nearby is the Cottonwood Mining District.

Carlson suggests that Sano is named either after Sano de Pietro, a 15th century Italian painter, or after nearby Sand Pass<ref>Helen S. Carlson, "Nevada Place Names: A Geographical Dictionary," p. 210</ref>.
