On Saturday, coffee and a continental breakfast will be served starting at 7:00am. Following that, at 10am, we'll be offering a members-discounted Fly Ranch Nature Walk with Friends of Black Rock Staff and Board Members. For tickets and additional information for this event click here. The proceeds for this Nature Walk will help to offset the costs of our Perseids Campout, so your participation is very much appreciated!
Also at 10:00am, our bike-packing board-member, Kurstin, will be leading a group ride from the 12-mile Playa Entrance to our Perseids Campout location. If you plan on joining the Nature Walk but still yearn for some pedal-powered fun, join Kurstin again at 10:00pm on Saturday night for another group ride near camp and onto the playa, while scanning for scorpions and meteors along the way! No bike, no problem? Friends of Black Rock will be bringing our fleet of five E-bikes, built for the Black Rock. To reserve yours today, call our office at 775-625-7848 or email us at info@blackrockdesert.org
Nighttime activities will kick-off at 6:30pm with a welcome and introduction by Friends of Black Rock Executive Director, followed by our Members Appreciation Dinner at 7pm. We've got the food covered but please bring your own plates/bowls/utensils.
Starting around 8:30, we'll enjoy a little live music courtesy of The Dustperados (local Gerlach band) and some glow in the dark bocce-ball. At 9:00pm Friends of Black Rock will lead a presentation on the vital importance of dark skies and their impact on the land and all of its inhabitants (us starry-eyed apes included!)
After that, once it's good and dark, the Perseids Meteor Shower Viewing Party will officially commence! Located near camp, Friends will set up a telescope and a hot-chocolate/beverage station. While you're welcome to stay up late and watch the meteors (which will peak at about 4am on August 10th), our viewing party will wrap-up around midnight.
On Sunday breakfast will begin again at 7:00am. Fill those bellies, remember to hydrate, and join our staff and volunteers for a Stewardship Event and Guided Tour of Black Rock Point and Hot Springs. Come learn about these unique ecosystems and how best to get there while caring for the land along the way. FBRHR will start gathering folks at 8:30am near our info tent and will begin caravanning to Black Rock Point at 9am. Volunteers will need a vehicle with high-clearance to make this drive, so we'll do what we can to help folks carpool. We will plan to return to camp around 12:30pm. Following the stewardship project, we'll begin breaking down camp, though people are welcome to stay as long as they'd like.
